Chinaberry Wood comes from a species of deciduous tree found natively in India, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, although it has been introduced to many other regions around the world. Chinaberry Wood is part of the Mahogany family, which includes the 3 true or genuine Mahogany species from the Americas that the family is most commonly associated with. Chinaberry Wood is known by many names including its scientific name Melia Azedarach, Persian Lilac, Indian Lilac, Pride Of India, Bead-Tree, Cape Lilac, Syringa Berrytree, Drek, and White Cedar, amongst others.

As part of the Mahogany family Chinaberry Wood features many of the wonderful traits of its better known American relatives, including a similar attractive grain pattern, and is often used as an alternative material for Honduran Mahogany. In terms of its physical properties, Chinaberry is classified as a hardwood, with a Janka hardness rating of around 1,000 pounds. This means it is a strong and lost lasting wood, resistant to denting, scratching, and general wear and tear, making it an excellent choice for guitar picks.

Although it has a long history of use in Asia, Chinaberry Wood is becoming an increasingly popular wood globally and is especially known for its beautiful and distinctive grain. Chinaberry trees were introduced to areas outside of their native range centuries ago as ornamental and shade trees, and were found to grow extremely well in hot regions.
